Creative people often see the world around them in different ways to others, resulting in imaginative, prescient artworks and projects that can lead to new ways of doing and seeing things. There is often a link too between creatives and various forms of neurodiversity.
As a HSP myself (Highly Sensitive Person) and the grandmother of child on the autistic spectrum, I’ve done a lot of reading/research on neurodiversity and would like to share with you some books that have resonated with me.
It is quite an eclectic list! Most of the books I refer to are in the library.
Divergent Mind (Thriving in a Word That Wasn’t Designed for You) by Jenara Nerenberg
Any books by Judith Orloff who writes about High Sensitivity and Empathy
Quiet and Bittersweet by Susan Cain
Hagiography by Sharon Blackie
Fox and I by Sharon Raven (Memoir about a solitary woman’s relationship with a fox.)
The Myth of Normal by Gabor Mate (how we are failing to be “normal” in an increasingly abnormal world)
Sounds Wild and Broken by David George Haskell (about the healing effect of sounds and detrimental effect of noise pollution on humans and animals)
On Agoraphobia by Graham Caveney ( witty account of the issues he has going out into the world.)
Self Compassion Kirsten Neff
